Paseo at Downtown Disney Review: A Culinary Journey Through Mexico

As a frequent visitor to the Disneyland Resort, I’m always excited to try new dining experiences in Downtown Disney. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to preview two highly anticipated restaurants – Centrico and Pao – before their official openings. In this comprehensive Paseo at Downtown Disney review, I’ll take you on a mouthwatering journey through these exciting new additions to the Downtown Disney dining scene.

The following information on this article come directly from Magic Journey’s video on YouTube.

Centrico: A Taste of Authentic Mexican Cuisine

Stepping into Centrico, I was immediately struck by the warm and inviting atmosphere. The restaurant exudes a modern yet comfortable vibe, with stylish decor that pays homage to Mexican culture. The aroma of freshly prepared dishes filled the air, heightening my anticipation for the meal to come.

The Appetizers

Our culinary journey began with Centrico’s complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were clearly house-made, with a satisfying crunch and perfect thickness. The accompanying salsa was bursting with flavor – not too spicy, but with enough kick to keep things interesting. It was a promising start to our meal.

Next, we sampled the Cochinita Pibil Tacos. These tacos were a true highlight of the evening. The pork shank was incredibly tender, practically melting in my mouth. The dish was accompanied by black bean puree, pickled onions, and a habanero salsa that added just the right amount of heat. The handmade tortillas were a standout feature, showcasing the restaurant’s commitment to authentic, high-quality ingredients.

The Main Course

For the main course, I couldn’t resist trying the Wagyu Burger. This isn’t your typical burger – it’s a 60/40 blend topped with roasted tomatoes, jalapeños, and a special aioli sauce. The burger was cooked to perfection, with a juicy interior and a slightly crisp exterior. The combination of flavors was outstanding, with the richness of the Wagu beef complemented beautifully by the freshness of the toppings and the creamy aioli.

My dining companion opted for the Carne Asada Huarache, a dish that truly showcased the chef’s expertise. The steak was cooked to perfection, served atop a bed of refried beans and topped with a delicious cheese fondue. The dish was garnished with spinach and caramelized onions, adding layers of flavor and texture to each bite.

Side Dishes

We also sampled some of Centrico’s side dishes, including their street corn. This classic Mexican dish was elevated to new heights, with a creamy, slightly spicy coating and a generous sprinkle of cheese. The addition of lime juice provided a bright, citrusy note that balanced the richness of the dish perfectly.

Beverages

To accompany our meal, we tried several of Centrico’s signature cocktails. The Coco Rocas was a standout, featuring Bacardi Superior rum, passion fruit juice, pineapple juice, and coconut juice. The drink was beautifully presented with a dusting of cocoa on top, and the flavors were perfectly balanced – reminiscent of a piña colada but with added complexity from the passion fruit.

We also sampled the Tropipop Crush, a refreshing concoction of Helix Vodka, watermelon juice, lime juice, cucumber bitters, and simple syrup. This drink was particularly appealing on a warm day, with the cucumber and watermelon flavors providing a cooling effect.

For those who prefer non-alcoholic options, Centrico offers an impressive selection of mocktails. We tried a guava-based mocktail that was both visually stunning and delicious, proving that you don’t need alcohol to enjoy a well-crafted drink.

Dessert

No meal is complete without dessert, and Centrico did not disappoint. We indulged in the Guava Pavlova, a beautifully presented dessert featuring a delicate meringue shell filled with horchata foam, guava compote, and vanilla toffee. The combination of textures and flavors was sublime – the crisp meringue contrasting with the creamy horchata foam and sweet-tart guava compote.

Pao: An Elevated Dining Experience

As if our experience at Centrico wasn’t exciting enough, we were then invited to preview Pao, the upscale restaurant located on the second floor. This unexpected turn of events allowed us to get a first look at what promises to be one of Downtown Disney’s most sought-after dining destinations.

The Ambiance

Ascending the stairs to Pao, I was immediately struck by the restaurant’s elegant design. The dining room features beautiful straw lamps, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere. One of the most impressive features is the open kitchen concept, allowing diners to watch the culinary team at work. This adds an element of theater to the dining experience and underscores the restaurant’s commitment to transparency and culinary excellence.

The Bar

We made our way to Pao’s bar, where we were treated to some of their signature cocktails. I opted for the Maya Thai, a sophisticated twist on the classic Mai Tai made with mezcal instead of rum. The drink was topped with a guava foam and beautifully garnished, making it as visually appealing as it was delicious. The smoky notes from the mezcal added depth to the tropical flavors, creating a complex and satisfying cocktail.

Inside Bar

My companion chose a custom mocktail created by the bartender. This off-menu creation featured pineapple and grapefruit, resulting in a refreshing and well-balanced non-alcoholic option.

The View

One of the unexpected highlights of Pao is the view. Some tables offer a glimpse of the Disneyland fireworks, adding a touch of magic to the dining experience. This unique feature is sure to make Pao a popular choice for special occasions or romantic dinners.
