Disney’s Animal Kingdom Set for Major Tropical Americas Expansion

Walt Disney Imagineering has officially filed a Notice of Commencement for the highly anticipated Tropical Americas expansion at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This filing is the first step in transforming DinoLand U.S.A. into an immersive experience inspired by the vibrant cultures and landscapes of the tropical Americas.

The latest documents, submitted today, pertain to the installation of trailers at the new Imagineering project compound located at the back of the park. Modular Building Systems International has been assigned to this task. These temporary facilities are typical for large-scale construction endeavors, similar to those seen during the Fantasyland redevelopment at Magic Kingdom and the creation of Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Although the permit does not specify the project’s details, it is widely believed to mark the initial phase of the previously announced “Blue Sky” project, which involves redeveloping DinoLand U.S.A. with themes from “Encanto” and Indiana Jones. More information is expected at the 2024 D23 Fan Event in August.

Last year, The Walt Disney Company revealed plans to significantly increase its investment in the Parks, Experiences, and Products segment, with capital expenditures projected to nearly double to approximately $60 billion over the next decade. This ambitious plan aims to enhance and expand park offerings.

In September 2023, Disney disclosed that new experiences inspired by the Academy Award-winning film “Encanto” and the adventurous Indiana Jones character were under consideration for the revamped DinoLand U.S.A. This reimagined area will be themed around the tropical Americas, replacing the existing Dinosaur ride with an Indiana Jones attraction and transforming Dino-Rama into an “Encanto” experience.

A New Era for DinoLand U.S.A.

Bruce Vaughn, head of Walt Disney Imagineering, expressed his excitement about the project, saying, “Imagine a land filled with authentic experiences from this part of the world, complete with the placemaking and storytelling you’d expect. It’s a beautiful region that has inspired many magical stories, and we’re thrilled to bring that to life.”

The reimagined land will not only feature attractions based on “Encanto” and Indiana Jones but will also include a new show inspired by “Zootopia” at the Tree of Life theater. This show will take guests on a journey through the various biomes featured in the film, alongside beloved characters like Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.

Disney has confirmed that the “Zootopia” experience will replace the current “It’s Tough to Be a Bug” show, although specific closure dates have not been announced. Imagineers are still finalizing the concept, with more details to be revealed in the future.

Looking Ahead

The Tropical Americas expansion represents a significant step forward for Disney’s Animal Kingdom, promising to bring fresh, immersive experiences to guests. With the introduction of “Encanto,” Indiana Jones, and “Zootopia” attractions, the park is set to offer a diverse array of adventures that celebrate storytelling and creativity.

As the project progresses, fans eagerly await more updates and the unveiling of the detailed plans. The transformation of DinoLand U.S.A. into a vibrant new land is sure to enhance the magical experience that Disney’s Animal Kingdom is known for, making it an even more captivating destination for visitors of all ages.
