Disneyland to Close 6 Attractions Amid Summer Rush

Disneyland will close six attractions for seasonal refurbishments during the hottest month of summer, just before the Halloween crowds descend on the Anaheim theme parks. The upcoming closures will impact some of Disneyland’s most popular rides and experiences.

Space Mountain, Disneyland Railroad, Disneyland Monorail, Animation Academy, Turtle Talk with Crush, and Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome will all temporarily close in August as part of Disneyland’s standard refurbishment schedule. These closures add to the list of attractions already shut down for maintenance.

Focus on Space Mountain and Rail Services

The iconic Space Mountain indoor roller coaster in Tomorrowland will be the first to go offline, closing on August 5 for a monthlong refurbishment. A reopening date for Space Mountain has not yet been announced. The Disneyland Railroad, which offers a Grand Circle Tour around the park, will also close on August 5. Similarly, the Disneyland Monorail, which connects Tomorrowland to Downtown Disney, will close on August 12. Neither rail service has a set reopening date at this time.

Animation Academy and Turtle Talk with Crush

The Animation Academy, where visitors can learn to draw their favorite Disney characters, and the Turtle Talk with Crush interactive video show will both close on August 5 for seasonal refurbishment. Turtle Talk is scheduled to return on August 16, but a return date for the Animation Academy has not been confirmed.

Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome

Fans of the Frozen franchise will have to wait to meet their favorite characters, as Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome character meet-and-greet experience in Hollywood Land at Disney California Adventure will be closed for refurbishment from August 5-15.

Additional Ongoing Closures

These new closures join several other attractions already undergoing maintenance. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes remain closed as part of the larger closure of Critter Country. This area is being transformed into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and reopening dates for these attractions have not been set.

The Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln animatronics show has been closed since April with no reopening date announced. The Haunted Mansion has been closed since January for an extensive renovation of its outdoor queue area, which will include a new accessibility elevator for wheelchair users and a retail shop at the exit. This beloved ride is expected to return by August 23, just in time for the Halloween season.

Long-term Closures and Repurposing

Several attractions have not reopened since the yearlong pandemic closure of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Disneyland’s Star Wars Launch Bay is currently being used for Imagination Campus, an educational travel workshop that teaches students about the arts and sciences employed in Disney theme parks.

While these temporary closures may cause some inconvenience for park-goers, they are a necessary part of maintaining the high standards of Disneyland’s attractions. Guests can look forward to enjoying refreshed and improved experiences once these beloved rides and shows return to operation.
