Disney and Oriental Land Co. (OLC) are set to transform the cruise industry in Japan with their latest venture. The two companies have announced a new agreement to launch year-round Disney cruise vacations in Japan, scheduled to start by early 2029. This new initiative will see OLC building and operating a Disney-branded cruise business within Japan.
This development marks the continuation of a fruitful partnership that has thrived for over 40 years. OLC is the owner and operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, and this new cruise project is seen as the next logical step in their long-standing collaboration.
Expanding Disney’s Global Reach
“Disney Cruise Line has ambitious plans to bring family vacations and Disney storytelling to more guests around the world than ever before,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences. “We are thrilled to continue the success of this expansion as we collaborate with Oriental Land Co. to introduce another distinctly Disney vacation experience to families and fans in Japan.”
The announcement follows the successful launch of the Disney Wish in 2022. The Disney Wish was the first new ship in the Disney fleet in a decade and the first to use lower-emission dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG). This ship joined an impressive lineup that includes Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, and Disney Fantasy.
Details of the New Cruise Ship
The new Disney cruise ship will be registered and based in Japan, offering cruises year-round. Construction is set to take place at the renowned Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The ship’s design will be crafted by Walt Disney Imagineering, ensuring it embodies the magical experiences Disney is known for, with special modifications to cater to Japanese guests.
This new vessel, a sister ship to the Disney Wish, is expected to be approximately 140,000 gross tons and will also be powered by liquefied natural gas. It will feature around 1,250 staterooms, offering plenty of space for families and guests to enjoy their vacations.
Expanding Destinations and Environmental Commitment
Disney Cruise Line currently sails to an array of destinations, including The Bahamas, the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, the South Pacific, and Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, year-round cruises from Singapore are set to begin in 2025, further showcasing Disney’s commitment to expanding its global reach.
This new Japanese venture reflects Disney’s dedication to sustainable travel solutions, following the environmentally conscious path laid by the Disney Wish. The use of LNG, a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels, underscores Disney’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental impact.
The collaboration between Disney and OLC for this new cruise ship promises to offer unique Disney experiences tailored for Japanese guests, blending Disney’s world-renowned entertainment and storytelling with the rich cultural heritage of Japan.
As the world looks forward to 2029, the anticipation for this new Disney cruise ship grows. Families and Disney fans in Japan will soon have the opportunity to embark on magical voyages, experiencing the enchantment of Disney on the high seas, right from their homeland.
